It had to happen sooner or later. Sure, superheroes die and come back all the time in comics. But sooner or later a final exit must occur. Yet what would be the most fitting end for The Batman?

Should he go out heroically in a climactic battle with an arch-foe? Ironically by some random thug who happens to get lucky? Tragically by an alien overlord?

But after seeing the Batman Beyond series, and the Justice League Unlimited episode "Epilogue", it was clear to me that the death Batman deserves is the one he never would have expected.

To go peacefully, in his sleep, surrounded by those who love him.

Thanks to Yogurth :iconyogurthfrost: for doing this for me. (You all didn't think I drew this myself, right?! ^^;)

And for those who don't know, the people in this pic are (from left to right)
Timothy Drake (formerly Robin)
Barbara Gordon (formerly Batgirl, now Police Commissioner)
Dick Greyson (Nightwing)
Terry McGinnis (the new Batman and, genetically, Bruce Wayne's son)
Dana McGinnis (Terry's wife) with their son Thomas Wayne McGinnis (named for his great-grandfather)

If anyone deserved a peaceful end, it was him.

Thanks. Yogurth did the really heavy lifting on this piece (i.e. drew it!) but this was the first one we'd done together where I had the initial idea, he'd draw it, then I'd say "Close, but not quite." So I feel like I stuck my nose in enough to call it my own. ;)

Yeah, but just think how close he came to no one being there. This is the happiest end I could imagine for him.

An excellent idea and an awesome picture.
If any hero deserved to go peacefully in his sleep surrounded by loved ones it is Batman, especially after all he's done over the course of his life.

Not giving up is not the meaning of persistence...
It's being able to stand up again after falling down!!

Wow... this is great. Very touching and a fitting tribute. Far better than what Didio and the DC hacks did to him. Excellent work.

You know, I kind of envisioned some of his old foes being there as well to reminisce about the "good times" they shared; Eddie Nygma thinking back on their battle of wits, Harvey remembering how Bruce always believed he could be reformed, Selina considering what they had and what could have been... but that's just me. This is still a fine work.

I might have included them - except I was keeping it to those who knew Bruce Wayne was Batman.

Besides, I feel confident that Bruce probably outlived all his rogues' gallery. Excepting, perhaps, "Nana" Harley.
