SCENES FROM THE AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER SERIES FINALE

"LAST LIGHTNING"

by Taigan

She felt the bone in her knee shatter and knew the battle was over, even as her warrior's pride rebelled.  As she fell, she felt two more strikes -- crippling her arms, keeping her from catching herself -- and she landed heavily on the floor.

Grimacing, Azula looked up at the battle-raged waterbender.  Katara's water whip hung menacingly in the air, poised to strike.

"Well?!" hissed Azula. "What are you waiting for?! Finish it!!"

Katara's face hardened.  Then the whip lashed out.  Azula braced for the impact...

...and instead felt a cold constriction around her.  She looked down and saw her injured limbs encased in casts of ice, freezing them to the floor.

"Those will keep you from moving around and hurting yourself," Katara said tersely.  "Not that you deserve that much."

Just then the Fire Lord's palace shook as though a great gale had nearly torn it from its foundations.

Katara looked to the ceiling anxiously.  "Aang," she muttered to herself before turning and running off.

Left alone, Azula struggled to free herself.  The battle with the water-witch had been prolonged and she lacked even the strength to melt herself free, but still she tried.  Then she heard the sound of footsteps from behind her.

"You shouldn't try to move," a familiar voice admonished.

"Zuzu?" Azula exclaimed.

The old nickname seemed not to faze her brother as he knelt next to her.  "The battle goes poorly for the Fire Nation," he said simply.  "The invading armies have routed most of our forces and, even now, our father faces the Avatar."  He looked into her eyes.  "We both know how this is going to end."

Seething, Azula silently agreed.  These last few months she had seen the Avatar's power grow as he mastered the last of his skills.  She doubted her father would be victorious.  Still...  "This battle might be lost.  But it's far from over. Whether at the head of the Fire Army or just by myself I will see our family avenged.  Starting with that water peasant!"

Zuko stared at his sister, his face inscrutable.  Then he turned and looked at the archway Katara had disappeared through.  "She's grown strong," he said simply.

Azula flushed angrily. "I may have underestimated her," she spat. "But there's more than one way to finish this.  She can't fight what she doesn't see coming."  Azula's voice dropped to and evil growl.  "She'll regret not having killed me when she could have."

Still looking away, Zuko shook his head, "She couldn't have.  Even knowing who... what... you are, Katara would never kill you.  Somewhere deep down, she knows what letting you live means.  That one day you'll return and avenge yourself on her and everything she loves.   Even knowing that, she still couldn't take your life."

Zuko stood and looked down at his helpless sister.

"She's a hero, you see," he said.  "Not like us."

Something in his voice made her pause. "Us?"

Azula looked into her brother's face.  For the first time she could remember, there was no hint of anger in those yellow eyes.  Only a hard determination: cold and certain.

Zuko's hand came up...

...and a peal of thunder echoed through the Fire Lord's palace.

This is my first fanfiction for Avatar: The Last Airbender.
When trying to write, my problem is that I get ideas for scenes, but can't connect the together into a coherent whole. So I'm trying to get away with letting the scenes stand on their own.

This is the first of ideas I've had for how things might go in the very last episode of Avatar. I'd be shocked if they actually did fall out this way, but it helps me pass the time until next season. ;p

NOTICE: I'm not going to list this as "mature content" 'casue I'd loose at least half of the target audience. And it really isn't anything "adult." But be warned that it's more like prime-time network TV rather than Nickelodeon.

P.S. Yes, I'm fully aware I'm ripping off Buffy: the Vampire Slayer at the end, but can't you just see it happening?

Very, very well done, the ending was great. It'll make a great explanation about where and how Azula went.Very in character.I like the fact that he does that in your story. No one in the avatar gaang would be able to do this, and he doesn't want to burden anyone else to do so either,so he finishes the job for everyone.Honestly,I think this still CAN work during the avatar finale (when Zuko and Katara got up and saw Azula going crazy and nearly burning herself) if Avatar was PG 13.Good job once again
